Our Story
Two Miami women. One school board meeting. A movement.
It started the way a lot of things do in Miami — with a mom who'd had enough. Lissette met Vanessa at a local club meeting, and after a long conversation about the latest legislation coming out of Tallahassee, it was clear: sitting around wasn't an option.
When they learned the Miami-Dade County School Board had an agenda item on how to handle book challenges, they mobilized — reaching out to activists, teachers, and parents across Miami to show up, speak up, and demand transparency in the process of how books get challenged and removed from schools. Moms for Libros was born.
What started as a response to one school board meeting has grown into a community of Miami parents who show up — to school board meetings, to Tallahassee, to the mic — because our kids deserve better than what's being decided without us in the room.
Our Vision
A Miami where every parent has clear, actionable information about what's happening in their child's school — and the power to do something about it. We envision a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive, and every parent has a seat at the table.
Our Mission
To support parents and teachers in navigating the laws and policies that affect their children's education — and to push back against politically motivated efforts that prioritize ideology over student well-being. We believe in books. We believe in public schools. We believe in Miami's kids.
Who We Are
Lissette Fernandez is the co-founder of Moms for Libros and a Miami mom of two elementary-aged children in Miami-Dade public schools. When the bad bills started passing in Tallahassee and she saw the direct impact on her kids' education and future, she stopped watching and started fighting. A graduate of FIU with degrees in Liberal Studies and Women's Studies, Lissette brings both personal urgency and policy knowledge to everything Moms for Libros does.
Vanessa Brito is a public policy consultant, lifelong activist, and lifelong Miamian who knows how to navigate Miami-Dade politics and policy. With a degree in Political Science from FIU and years of experience building strategic approaches for public entities, nonprofits, and political campaigns, Vanessa brings the expertise to turn outrage into action.
Both are lifelong Miamians who want nothing more than to leave this city — and this state — better than they found it. For the kids.
Watch: Moms for Libros Speaks Out
As featured in NBC Miami, the Miami Herald, Axios Miami, and the Sun Sentinel — because when Miami parents speak up, people listen.
